I gotta say Curse of the Golden Flower is best movie I've seen this year. It actually came out years ago but I just had the chance to watch it now. It's probably the most exciting and disturbing movie I've seen. Screw those Japanese horror movies, this is Chinese movie at its best. It's not really a horror movie but it really provokes strong emotions from its audience. And probably what made it really good are the twists.
It's set in China during the Tang Dynasty and the story revolves around the life of the royal family. It is the most expensive Chinese movie ever made and definitely the best I've seen.
There are some themes in the movie that is really disturbing. And if you don't want spoilers, you should stop reading now until you finished the movie.
First, the prince, son of the emperor, has an affair with the beautiful empress who she calls mother. Well, they are not really related because he is the son of the first wife of the emperor. Nevertheless! He's not really good looking and he looks like a wimp.
Second, the emperor killed his youngest son. He's a teenager I think. He killed him because he killed his older brother, the prince. If that's not enough, he used his metal belt and hit him to death. While that was going on, the empress just walked away.
Third, evil will win. The uprising against the evil emperor was brutally crushed. That is stupidity on the part of the empress. She should have let the prince die so he couldn't tell the emperor of the uprising. Grrrr. Frustrating.
